Llinux could still follow the POE standard even if the data lines were not technically Ethernet. The MX chip appears suitable for this but, as always the devil is in the detail so read the data sheet to see if there are any gotchas. I made the mistake of thinking it was Ethernet by looking at the picture and not actually reading the title RS or the article.

This is the obvious choice because you are creating a solution that does not require clock sync across the llinux cable – you have local sync at both ends and that works just fine.
